The Royce and Jane Reynolds Program in Church Leadership
A partnership of the United Methodist Foundation of Western North Carolina, Inc. and the Center for Creative Leadership

"My purpose in supporting the program (financially) is to try to develop visionary leadership for the church who will focus on our main mission and will help the UMC do a better job of making disciples for Jesus Christ." - Royce Reynolds

This is a certification leadership development program offered to United Methodist clergy in the Western North Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia , South Carolina, North Georgia, and Florida conferences. Since 1999 participants have been recommended to the program by their bishops, district superintendents, and previous years' graduates.

For more than 15 years, Janice Virtue and Russ Moxley have led groups of 25 clergy to learn from both academic and experiential disciplines. Through lectures, small groups, comprehensive feedback (self- and peer-scored instruments), coaching, reflection, peer learning, and renewal, participants grow in self-understanding and how it is to maximize their leadership potential. The program takes place during four different sessions over a 10-month period beginning in August and ending in May. Participants regularly praise this program as transformational for self and ministry.

The Royce and Jane Reynolds Leadership Academy for Evangelism & Discipleship
A two-year, peer leadership program offered to ordained clergy in The Western North Carolina Conference

"There ought to be a way for ministers who are eager to reach the unchurched to get together and share ideas, programs, victories, concerns and failures." With
that idea from Royce Reynolds so began the Academy for Leadership. "They (ministers) will pick their own format and subjects to discuss. They will have outside
speakers, share with each other and go to major churches that are really on fire; and they will hold each other accountable."

The Royce and Jane Reynolds Leadership Academy for Evangelism & Discipleship began in 2006 with a group of Western North Carolina 25 clergy committed to reaching the unchurched and committed to each other. This group gathers three times a year over a two year period. Participants learn from a wide range of Christian leaders: United Methodists, Pentecostals, Non-Denominational, Presbyterian, etc. They travel to where the most effective ministries are taking place and report quarterly of their churches' growth, including the number of professions of faith. They celebrate the joy and challenges of ministry all with an eye on, "How can we do better?"

Participants for this program are selected every two years and may be Lead or Sr. Pastors, Associate Pastors for Evangelism and/or Discipleship, or Executive Pastors. A minimum participation of two years is required. A maximum of participation is four years. 100% attendance is expected. Participants in the program are expected to share their learning in their church, their district and their conference.

Applications accepted by referral.

The Reynolds Academy for Ministry Management

A one-year, peer leadership program for Senior Pastors in The Western North Carolina Conference with a focus on strong management and administrative practices.

The purpose of the Reynolds Academy for Ministry Management (formerly known as “Great Pastor/Great Administrator”) is to equip clergy with the necessary skills to effectively manage a church. Through this program, clergy leaders learn management skills and strategies to successfully implement innovative disciple-making ministry. When pastors are also strong administrators, they are better equipped to make disciples for Jesus Christ.

Previous participants of the program have said:
“This is the most helpful and applicable continuing education program I’ve ever participated in.”
“Very helpful! It helped explain a lot of issues I see in the church and gave me specific ways to improve our processes.”
“All pastors need this info and it would be helpful before the appointment to a larger church.”
