2014 Western North Carolina Conference Annual Stewardship Initiative

"Growing In Faith...Living In Hope...Celebrating Through Generosity"

PURPOSE:

The 2014 Annual Stewardship Emphasis is offered to unify a conference-wide stewardship message that is consistent with Bishop Goodpaster's emphasis of vital congregations being generous as part of their discipleship journey. All congregations and church-related institutions/organizations are encouraged to participate in the initiative.

SUPPORTIVE BIBLICAL TEXTS:

Growing in Faith (Matthew 17:30) - "Jesus replied, Because you have so little faith. I tell you the truth, if you have faith as small as a mustard see, you can say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there' and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you."

Rationale: Society tells us we need more of everything and more is never enough. We focus on what we do not have (scarcity) rather than what
we do have (God's abundance). Practically applying this scripture will help the individual to realize that even the smallest amount of faith will
help them grow as disciples by "moving" the self-imposed boundaries society dictates to us.
Faith in God is stronger than faith in humankind/society.

Living in Hope (Matthew 6:25-34, selected verses) - "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more imporatnt than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are not much more valuable than they?...So do not worry, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?' For pagans run after all these things, and your heavely Father knos you need them. But seek first his kigdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own."

Rationale: Jesus' words, although they focus on the individual's human inclination to worry, actually encourage followers to grow in faith, to live in hopeful anticipation that God will provide those things required to live the life of a faithful disciple.

Celebrating through Generosity (I Timothy 6:17-19) - "Command those who are rich (possess abundance) in this present world not be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain (leads to mindset of scarcity), but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. Command them to do good, to be rich in deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundtion for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life."

Rationale: As one realizes that all one posseses is of God, the mindset of abundance surpasses that of scarcity and through our faithful discipleship, we become that which God has called us to be.
